At college, I was given the opportunity to go to the library and look through the photography books to choose a single image that I liked the most. This sparked my passion for this area as I was able to study the photographer and use their style and techniques and interpret their work. The image I chose is on the left hand page on the image to the right, taken by Bruce Davidson from his famous Series ‘New York Subway’. What caught my eye and the reason why I chose this photo was the way he has used the converging lines which draws the viewers eyes to the centre and focal point of this image which is the man.

When I went to create my own shoot, it was very much trial and error. Due to Davidsons’ low light during the night time, he was unable to use bright, natural light. For this reason, the bright, bold light from the train lends itself to effective lighting leaving the viewer with many questions about why we cannot see his face, or the hidden message in the surroundings, why aren’t we able to see people and their reactions. Therefore, before taking this shoot I had to search at night for the ideal setting to take my photos. I was fortunate to come across this underground passage which provided perfect lighting and enabled me to create converging lines in my images to create focal points. When taking this shoot I also used another synthetic light, which was a torch and shone it on the dragon embroidery on the models’ jeans. As a result of the synthetic light, the subtle blue glow on the dragon gave my image texture and depth. Unfortunately, throughout the shoot many of the images were a little underexposed as the underground lights were not very strong but apart from that I really enjoyed this shoot.
